I don’t know about you, but here at SPS we’re all suckers for an animal good luck story. And one that involves a rabbit being saved from certain death is certainly guaranteed to bring a smile to our faces.
So when a truck driver got into trouble in Houston, Texas, last week, what thankfully turned out to be a luck escape for the driver also inadvertently saved the life of a wild rabbit as well.
A 23 year old man was driving his truck home at around 10 p.m., following the directions given by his GPS. He ran into some high water and tried to navigate his Ford F-350 through the wash, but the current was too strong and it carried the truck downstream into the lake.
Luckily the man used his cell phone to call his sister, and climbed out of the window to take safe refuge on the back of the pickup whilst waiting for the rescue services. They duly arrived and rescued the man. However, whilst doing so the rescue guys also noticed a wild rabbit had been trapped by the rising water and was clinging for dear life to a tree to prevent being washed away to what would surely be a watery doom.

So in the spirit of the true animal lover, a DPS trooper donned his rubber boots and waded out into the water to save the rabbit. The little guy must have known that his savior had arrived, as apparently he didn’t panic or struggle. He allowed himself to be carried to safety and when released on dry land, simply hopped away into the woods.
How’s that for a tale that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside! I’d like to think that the rabbit stopped for a moment just before it disappeared from view, and looked back to gain a couple of second’s eye contact with his rescuer – just to show his gratitude. But that’s probably just my imagination running a little wild…
So from all of us at SPS, here’s a great big thank you to the trooper who took the time to save the wild rabbit. It’s great to know that our emergency services not only look out for the humans of the country – but also the other living creatures as well.
Till next time – love those bunnies…
