Can Guinea Pigs Eat Pears?
Mmmm, yummy pears. One of our favorite fruit treats, so it makes sense that many owners want to know the answer to can guinea pigs eat pears. And it’s not just pears, is it – there are so many different varieties that you’ll probably be wondering if they can all be fed to your piggy.
The thing is, the reason we love pears so much is because of their sweetness. And you know what that’s caused by? Yep, their high sugar content. And the same as with humans, too much sugar just isn’t good for our piggies.
Below are a couple of points that need to be taken into account when feeding pears to your guinea pig:
Feeding pears can provide a source of vitamin C for your guinea pig. Remember that guinea pigs, the same as humans, can’t synthesize vitamin C in their bodies so they need to gain this on a daily basis from their diet. So that is obviously a plus of fruit such as peaches. But – and this is a big but – a high proportion of fruits contain a large amount of sugar. And sugar is something that all of us, including our guinea pigs, don’t need too much of.
The second thing to remember is that our piggies are one of the cutest, cheekiest animals that you could have as a pet. But don’t we all know how talented they are at making us feel that they’ll simply fade away if we don’t give them another treat now!
The point is, discipline and moderation are the most important things when it comes to feeding fruits to your guinea pig.
Lastly, the most important thing we can do is to provide our piggies with the essentials in their daily diet. And that means a constant supply of both fresh water and top quality hay. We also need to keep a store of guinea pig pellets fortified with vitamin C. A sensible amount of fruits and vegetables can round out the diet.

Till next time – love those piggies…..
