Can Guinea Pigs Eat Blueberries?

Blueberries!  Hailed as a ‘super-food’ for humans, can the same be said for our cavy friends?  They are a good source of vitamin C, that’s for sure.  But, and this is true of virtually all fruits, not only blueberries, but they are particularly high in sugar.  After all, what do you think gives them that wonderfully sweet flavor?

To keep things as simple and easy to remember as possible, before feeding any fruit to your guinea pigs (blueberries included) you’ve got to be aware of few important things:

Although fruit fed on occasion and in moderation provides vitamin C (good for guinea pigs as they cannot synthesize their own…just like humans), many fruits are also high in sugar (not good for guinea pigs especially when overdone).

2.  Guinea pigs are highly persuasive animals, perhaps the most persuasive animal on the planet.  Being extremely adorable and loveable gives them the unique ability to persuade humans to do whatever they want them to do, especially when it comes to asking for more goodies from their owners.  Wheeek Wheeeek!

The point here is…everything needs to be done in moderation, and you’ve got to maintain your discipline as a good guinea pig owner because they’re so tough to say no to.

Also, remember that the most important thing you can do for a guinea pig is to ensure high quality timothy hay and fresh water are available at all times, as well as making sure you have vitamin C fortified pellets on hand.  We hope this helps, and of course, it goes without saying that if you ever have any serious questions about the health of your guinea pig it is always best to consult with your veterinarian.

Thanks for stopping by, and we hope we’ll see you around again real soon.

Till next time…love those piggies!
