Belinda Says Hay: “A Halloween Ghost Story”

Belinda Says Hay spokesrabbit blog, ”A Halloween Ghost Story” Oct 18, 2026

Hello. It's Belinda.

I hope you're in the mood for a scary story. Because I have a good one for you.

It all started on the night before Halloween, a few years back. A stormy night, with lots of thunder and lightning.

I was relaxing on my sleeping rug, next to the furnace. Little Fang was in her pen, chewing orchard hay. The English was in his pen across the room. Not sure what he was doing. Not interested.

Suddenly lightning lit up the window over the dryer. And then, BOOM! Thunder shook the house.

"Stop that!"

It was Little Fang. Yelling. She hates to be startled.

A few seconds later, the refrigerator at the top of the stairs stopped humming. I heard beeping.

Next thing you know, my roommate is shuffling down the steps to the bottom level, carrying a big flashlight. The beam from the flashlight was “dancing” all over the steps and wall.

"Don’t worry, bunnies," she said. "The power went out. It's fine."

She walked across the room to me and pointed the flashlight at my water bowl and hay pile. Then she turned and lit the inside of Little Fang‘s pen. She checked on the English too.

"Alright! Everyone's got plenty of snacks and water."

My roommate headed toward the steps, as if to go back upstairs, but then she stopped in her tracks. She leaned forward and placed the flashlight on the floor, so that it pointed toward Little Fang's pen and the wall behind it.

"There bunnies. Now you have light."

She took her phone out of her pocket and hit it a few times with her thumbs. Suddenly, a light shone from the back of her phone. She pointed it down in front of her and walked back upstairs to the kitchen.

The flashlight she left behind, on the floor, was too bright in my opinion. It lit Little Fang's pen like "high noon."

It seemed to me all I would have to do was hit one or two of the buttons on the handle and I could turn the beam to a lower setting.

This is where the story takes a turn.

As I walked toward the flashlight, Little Fang thumped.

Then she thumped again.

I stopped and turned toward her. Little Fang's eyes were like saucers. She was frozen, looking at the wall.

This is what she saw.

"Get out!"

She yelled at the wall.

I turned and "squatted" to make myself smaller.

It didn't work.

Little Fang thumped again.

"Get away from my pen!"

Meanwhile I was trying to figure out how to turn off the flashlight.

The longer I messed with it, the more my shadow "flew around" the wall.

"It's a Halloween ghost," whispered Little Fang.

It’s just my shadow, I said. Come on.

By the way. Did you notice that the English didn't have anything to say? That's because he was hiding in his sleeping box. He ran inside as soon as Little Fang thumped.

"What’s all the racket down here, bunnies?"

My roommate was almost at the bottom of the steps by the time I noticed her. I brought my paws up, pretending to be busy grooming my face.

"Belinda, leave my flashlight alone. I can't go upstairs for two minutes to get parsley out of the sink without you messing around."

While she distributed the parsley, I returned to my sleeping rug. Before long, she and her too-bright flashlight were back upstairs.

Little Fang, the English and I chewed our parsley and listened to the rain.

I never again mentioned the "haunted wall" to Little Fang.

She can't help being jumpy. Especially at Halloween.

Sincerely,

Belinda
