Belinda Says Hay: “Baby Bunnies”

Hello. It's Belinda.

I have a special treat for you today.

Not a food treat. This "goodie" is a fun story from my friend Terry.

After Terry read my June 27 blog about baby bunnies, he emailed me some stories of his own about a very special mama rabbit and her kits.

They were all wild rabbits who lived in the backyard.

Here's what Terry wrote:

"Dear Belinda,

Always look forward to your post every Sunday, and this past Sunday was no exception. It brings to mind our first bunny and what started our love for and lives with bunnies.

We had a nice fenced backyard and would occasionally see cottontails. One little doe became a regular visitor. She totally adopted us and we named her “Bunny” (very original)!!!

Bunny lived with us for 7 years and raised many a litter of kits. She would feed her babies in front of us but in all 7 years we never once touched or tried to touch her and she never touched us.

She was especially bonded to my wife, Jeanne, so much so that she would go and sit with her when she'd do any gardening in the backyard.

I saw things between the two of them that would sound like total fantasy, but having seen them firsthand I know they happened. 

When Jeanne first discovered the bunny nest in our backyard, she uncovered it because all she saw was some movement of some grass and was curious what it was. 

This is what she saw.

So she came and got me and we just melted seeing those little babies!!!

Next thing we know the babies decided to get out and do a little exploring, and one went pretty far over by the fence.”

It's me Belinda. You won't believe this part of the story.

Because while Jeanne and Terry were uncovering the nest and watching the babies, mama Bunny was close by observing the whole thing. 

And here's what happened next.

“Eventually the babies all came back to the nest, except we thought the one by the fence was still over there somewhere. We were concerned about that baby being out. 

So after we covered the nest, Jeanne pointed over to the fence.”

She was telling mama Bunny where the “runaway” baby was. 

“Bunny looked at Jeanne and then uncovered the nest, touched each little bunny head and then sat there and just looked at Jeanne, as if saying, ‘See, it's all OK.’ 

Jeanne covered the nest and we put small cross twigs on it. Bunny hopped off and we went inside.

Now how those two were able to communicate is beyond me, but I promise you they did and completely understood each other!!! Truly stranger than fiction!!!

Bunny will live in our hearts forever, and we always remember that 5 bunnies ago she started it all."
