Belinda Says Hay: “How Rabbits Celebrate Freedom”

Belinda Says Hay spokesrabbit blog, "How Rabbits Celebrate Freedom" July 5, 2026

Hello. It's Belinda.

Happy Fourth of July weekend to my friends in the USA.

The fourth is also known as "Independence Day."

Are you doing anything special? I hope you get to enjoy your favorite summer snacks.

As for us, we're "laying low." It's been super hot here in Pittsburgh. My roommate said it feels like 107 degrees outside.

Are you kidding me right now. That's too hot.

It's cool enough in our room but still.

Also we're bored.

That's me staring at Little Fang inside her pen.

That's how "low energy" I am. She is too.

OK now I want to talk about the meaning of Independence Day. The "freedom" part.

Rabbits like to be free. If you live with a rabbit you know it's true.

For instance when Little Fang is too "chatty" I like to run upstairs to the living room. If there's a door in the way I get "grumpy." I'm too short to reach the knob.

Once I'm upstairs I might take a "detour" to the corner of the dining room. Someone's been digging the carpet there.

If I find a heavy rug in that corner or a slab of cardboard, covering the carpet holes, I move it.

I'm allowed to "inspect" that part of the dining room no matter what my roommate says. It's part of being free.

Last but not least I like to help myself to treats.

My roommate is busy. I can't expect her to open boxes and bags for me all day long.

Usually she puts the "goodies" up high but sometimes she forgets. She'll set it on a low shelf and walk away.

Come on.

That's when I "freely" chew the box or bag to open it. And enjoy my independence.

Are the rabbits in your house celebrating freedom this weekend?

If so, tell them I said "Way to go."

I try to make every day of the year "Independence Day."

I hope they do too.

PS: If you have a good "before and after grooming" photo, send it to belinda@smallpetselect.com. I like to see how everyone's doing with their molts.

Or you can just email me to say hi.

Sincerely,

Belinda
