CHAPTER 277 –  HoB Guest

The little rabbit sat very still inside the kennel in the shelter. She was scared and she didn’t know what to do. Being part Dwarf, she was a small bunny. Her coat was very soft, with shades of brown and gray. A few hours before, she was fending for herself outside in a yard. A nice person from the Rabbit Haven rescue had caught her. She didn’t resist. She knew she needed help. But now, she was locked in a metal cage, all by herself. She wasn’t sure if this was better or worse. But at least she had food to eat and she was safe from predators.

One of the shelter workers came by and said, “Don’t be scared. You’ll be OK. We’re going to name you Merlot. We’ll try and find a nice home for you.” Merlot thought that sounded encouraging, but she was still very quiet and stayed on guard.

The weekend passed by, and another shelter worker took her out of her kennel and placed her inside a carrier. “You’re going to the vet to get spayed,” explained the worker. Merlot wasn’t sure what that meant, but it didn’t sound good. There was nothing she could do except cower at the back of the carrier.

They brought her out front and a man peered inside. It was Dad. He explained, “Hi there, little one. I know you’ve been through a lot, but don’t be scared. I’m not going to hurt you. I’m going to take you to the doctor tomorrow, so you’re going to be a guest at the House of Buns B&B tonight. We’ll get you fixed and then I’ll bring you back.” Merlot just eyed him cautiously.

After a short car ride, she arrived at the House of Buns. Dad placed her inside an exercise pen in the guest room. “Welcome to the House of Buns! Here’s where you’ll stay for the night,” he announced. Merlot wandered around the expen. There was a large Small Pet Select castle to hide in, a big plate of fresh greens, rabbit food, hay, water, and a litter box. Merlot was hungry, so she nibbled on some greens. Then, she hid inside the castle where she felt safe.

After giving her a few hours to get comfortable, Dad came in and knelt down by the castle. He peered inside and said, “Hi sweetie. How are you doing?” Merlot stuck her head out of the castle and gave Dad a sniff. He seemed trustworthy, so she stepped outside. Dad gave her some pets and gently lifted her onto the bed.

Merlot explored the bed and the pillows. Once she felt safe, she hopped over to Dad and laid on his chest. Dad’s heart melted as he stroked her head and ears. For the first time in a long time, Merlot relaxed. After awhile, she laid down on the bed next to Dad and watched TV. She wondered to herself, “I like this place. I wonder if I can stay here.”

Merlot wonders if this could be her future home.
