Chapter 137 - Announce Thyself
Bentley was half-napping in the bedroom when his ears picked up the sound of someone approaching. He stood up, ready to bolt. He looked. It was just Dad.
Dad looked at Bentley and said, “Relax Bentley. It’s just me. You’ve lived here for eight years, now. No one else ever comes in here!”
Bentley thought, “Dad, I’m a rabbit. We can never be too careful. We are hardwired to be alert and ready to run if we hear something. How am I supposed to know it’s just you?”
Dad replied, “OK, I see your point. How about from now on, I’ll announce myself when I’m coming.”
The next time Dad went to the bedroom, about halfway down the hall, he said out loud, “Hi Bentley. It’s just me, Dad!” Bentley’s ears perked up. He recognized Dad’s voice. He relaxed.
As Dad came into the room, he looked over at Bentley. To his surprise, Bentley remained in his half-nap position and didn’t stand up. It worked!
