CHAPTER 268 –  Rabbit Rule Book

“I gotta get going this morning, Bentley,” said Dad as he gave him a quick pet on the head, “No time for pets.” As he turned to walk away, Bentley followed after him and stood up on his back feet, which was quite unusual for Bentley. “Is that all I get, Dad? I want my morning pets!”

Dad looked back at Bentley, his heart melted. “You want more pets?” he asked. Bentley just waited. Dad said, “Oh, OK.” Even though it would make him late, Dad laid down on the floor with Bentley and gave him his usual thorough pets. How could he resist? He wondered if all rabbit people were habitually late because they had to stop and pet the rabbit.

“You’re such a guh boy,” whispered Dad as he stroked Bentley’s ears. Bentley thought, “I do my best, but it’s not like I was ever given a book called, ‘How to be a Good House Rabbit.’ I’m not sure what it would say in there!”

Dad thought about it for a moment and said, “Well, I suppose it would say something like:

Don’t chew the carpet.

Don’t chew the baseboards.

Don’t chew the bedding.

Well, just don’t chew on anything!

Use the litterbox.

Don’t stop eating.

Don’t wake up the human.

Give the human lots of snuggles.

Let the human pick you up and hug you.”

Bentley opened his eyes and looked at Dad, “Really? That’s what you humans expect? I try to do some of those things. I don’t wake you up in the morning. I try to use the litterbox as much as possible. I try to give you lots of snuggles. I’m even learning to let you pick me up and hug me. But that other stuff is just being a rabbit. We can’t help it. That’s just what rabbits do!”

Dad smiled, “Yes, I understand. That’s why I never get mad at you when you do that stuff. I know you’re not doing it to be naughty. You’re just being a rabbit. And you can’t make a rabbit not be a rabbit.”

Bentley was relieved. He was glad he had a Dad who was understanding. He closed his eyes and went back to enjoying his morning pet.

Too bad if Dad is busy. Bentley still wants his morning pets!
