Chapter 291 - The Road to Recovery
Abigail snuggled up against the exercise pen so she could be near Enzo. Enzo felt sorry for Abigail being cooped up in the pen while she recovered from her broken leg, so he spent hours laying beside her on the other side of the fence to keep her company. “I sorry you stuck in der!” he said sympathetically, “How your leg doing?” Abigail replied, “It’s getting better. I can walk on it again.”
Three weeks had passed since she broke her leg. It was time for her first checkup. Dad stepped into the pen to scoop her up and said, “OK, sweetie. Time to go to the vet and get some x-rays to see how you’re doing!” Dad placed her between the towel rolls in her carrier and off they went over the mountains to see the vet.
After taking x-rays, the vet brought Abigail back out to Dad. He scooped her up in his arms and stroked her ears while the vet pulled up the x-ray. “It’s starting to heal,” announced the vet, “You can see it filling in a bit, and the sharp point is rounding down. It would still be risky to let her go back to free roaming. You should keep her in the exercise pen for another four weeks and we’ll check again.”
Abigail was disappointed. She was ready to be let out of the pen. “Four weeks?” she wondered as she looked up at Dad. Dad looked down at his little girl and said, “Well, if all goes well, maybe you can come out of the pen in time for Christmas. That would be a nice gift!”
At home, Dad returned a reluctant Abigail back to her pen. Enzo ran over and asked, “You still stuck in der?” Abigail said, “Yes. For another four weeks!” Enzo groomed Abigail through the fence and assured her, “Don’t worry. I be here.” Merlot ran over to join them and said, “Me, too!”
Abigail was thankful that friends had not forgotten her. She looked forward to the day they could go back to being “the three amigos.”
Enzo and Merlot keep Abigail company from outside the pen.
