Best Hamster Care Books

hamster reference books

If you can believe it, there really aren’t tons of hamster care books on the market to choose from. Unfortunately, there’s no good reason why; they’re some of the best pets on the planet, and it’s important to be fully educated on ALL pets you bring into your home. Even though there aren’t many, there are some pretty darn good ones. Check out my favorites below.

If you’re thinking about bringing a hamster into your home (or you already have  one and just wanna know more about them), this book is perfect. “Hamster Care” is a complete guide and a great resource to help make informed decisions about hamster parenthood. This hamster care book covers everything from different hamster species (did you know that there are more than 25? And only 5 of those species have been domesticated?) to physical and behavioral characteristics, to common problems and illnesses. Oh, and the book talks tricks, too, and how to teach ‘em to your pet. And who doesn’t like tricks?

Another total win is that it’s a great book for kids. The language is totally understandable for a younger audience. So, if you have a kid begging for a hamster… snag this and have them read it before committing. Remember, any pet, no matter the size, is a big responsibility. Check it out here.

I know this one’s a little more specific (obviously, it’s all about dwarf hamsters), but I love it because I love the entire Barron line of Complete Pet Owner’s Manuals. All of the manuals are created for non-expert animal parents and potential animal adopters and are written by a trainer, breeder, veterinarian, or other animal specialist. Basically, the writers know exactly what they’re talking about, and the information is solid.

The author, Sharon Vaderlip (DVM), does a fantastic job of giving specific details for each species of dwarf hamster, rather than grouping “dwarf hamsters” together as one big group (like many other books do). And it’s fascinating that there really are big differences.

I’d highly recommend buying this hamster care book before you decide to adopt. It includes SO much great info that will absolutely help you be confident in your decision to either adopt or not to adopt a dwarf. Plus, it has loads of cute hamster pictures. And to me, that alone is worth the $5.54 price tag. Buy it here.

I’m a fan of this hamster care book simply because many of the reference guides I’ve come across don’t necessarily discuss hamster training at large. Author Sarah Yee does a good job talking about taming different species of hamsters, and because different species have different personalities and respond to different training techniques, I found this incredibly helpful. It’s tailored to your specific pet.

The book covers different ways to approach taming and provides a helpful daily schedule to master handling your hamster. If you’re struggling with hamster taming, check it out.

So, these are some of my favorites on hamsters. They all do a good job educating at any level. If you have a favorite hamster care book or guide, let us know. We’re always down for a good hamster read.
