Chapter 38 - Rabbit Hole of Rabbit Chores
Dad was not a morning person. By the time he finished breakfast with the buns, it was almost noon. “OK, guys. I’d better get started with the day,” said Dad to Enzo and Merlot. As he sat down at his desk, he noticed some rabbit “confetti” on the floor. “You guys made kind of a mess last night. I guess I should vacuum before I start my work,” he observed.
One thing led to another. As long as he was vacuuming, Dad thought he might as well change their four litter boxes so he could vacuum around them. And, as long as he was doing that for Enzo and Merlot, he might as well clean Bentley’s litter box and vacuum his area, too. And then, of course, Mobo’s Starship Bunnyprise needed its daily cleaning.
Enzo and Merlot watched the Shark come closer and closer. Being part Netherland Dwarf, Merlot was a bit skittish and ran off to the other side of the room. Enzo, on the other hand, had been around long enough to know it wouldn’t hurt him. He just stayed put and let Dad vacuum around him.
Vacuuming and litter boxes done, Enzo and Merlot watched Dad replenish their hay supply. Then, he disappeared for awhile. When he came back, he announced, “Hi guys, I made a new foraging ball for you!” The two rabbits ran over to check it out. Dad also delivered foraging balls to Bentley and Mobo.
By now, it was mid-afternoon. Dad threw the dirty litter box towels in the washing machine and started a load of laundry. As he breezed through the living room, he announced, “OK guys, it’s greens day. I’m off to the produce market to get greens for you.” Enzo and Merlot watched the front door slam shut. “Naptime!” announced Enzo. The two loped over behind the couch for their afternoon nap.
About an hour later, Dad came back through the door carrying two large bags. Enzo and Merlot were still napping behind the couch, but their sensitive noses told them fresh greens had arrived. Dad headed into the kitchen to clean and prep the greens. He washed all the greens, sorted out any bad ones, cut the stems, and placed them in loaf pans filled with water. Then he peeled and diced the apples. It was a tedious forty-five minute process that he repeated every three days.
Dad looked out the window. With the time change, dusk was already approaching. By “rabbit time,” it would soon be dinner time. Dad carefully prepared four trays of greens for the house rabbits and three trays for the Café Bunz outside. Then, he dutifully delivered them.
Finally, he sat down at his desk to start his work. He glanced at the clock. It read 4:30 PM. “Wow,” he thought, “4:30 PM and I’m just starting my day. I guess I really went down the rabbit hole of rabbit chores today. This is like a full time job. I don’t know how people who have a 9-5 job get all this done!”
Enzo and Merlot got up from their nap and ran over to check out their dinner tray. Enzo observed, “Dad do a lot for us.” Merlot, nibbling on a slice of banana, replied, “Yeah, he does. He’s a good bun slave! I mean, good bun dad!”
