CHAPTER 278 – A Bond Begins
Early the next morning, Dad placed Merlot in her carrier and whisked her off to the vet. Merlot was scared again. She didn’t know what to expect as she cowered in the back of her carrier. She had hoped she could stay at the House of Buns.
At the vet, Dad lifted her out of the carrier and gave her a hug. He said, “Don’t worry, I’ll be back later to pick you up. You’re in good hands.”
A few hours later, Merlot woke up from her nap. Something had happened when she was asleep. Her coat on her tummy was shaved, and she didn’t feel great. She was a bit groggy. A few hours passed and then they carried her out front. She heard Dad’s voice, “Hi sweetie! How are you? I told you I’d be back to get you.” Merlot was relieved.
Dad explained, “The shelter will be closed by the time we can get there, so it looks like you’ll have to spend another night at the House of Buns B&B. Is that OK?” Merlot thought that would be just fine!
That night, after dinner, Dad came into the guest room to check on Merlot. He asked, “How are you doing little one?” Merlot thought, “I don’t feel so great. I’m scared.” Dad said, “Don’t worry. You’ll be OK. You’ll feel better in a few days.”
Dad picked her up very gently, for her incision was still fresh. He placed her on the bed with him. Merlot snuggled up against Dad’s head so close that he could hear her heart beating. He gently stroked her head and ears to comfort her. Merlot felt safe next to Dad. She stayed there and didn’t move for a long time. It warmed Dad’s heart.
She wondered, “Could I stay here a little longer?” Dad said, “Well, I hate to send you back to the shelter right away after surgery. Maybe you could stay through the weekend.” Dad was doing his best not to fall in love, but he could feel his heart melting.
