Chapter 281 - Turning On the Charm

“I hate to send her back to the shelter right after surgery,” said Dad to the shelter, “I think I’ll let her stay through the week,” knowing full well that plenty of rabbits went straight back to the shelter after their spay surgery. But that was his story, and he was sticking to it. The shelter didn’t mind. No, the shelter didn’t mind at all!

The first night after she had escaped from the guest room, Dad put Merlot back in the guest room for the night and closed the door. He didn’t want to risk them getting into any fights while he was sleeping. But by the fourth day, no fights had occurred, so Merlot earned full-time free roam status. The three rabbits coexisted peacefully. Enzo and Merlot started hanging out together, and Abigail just kept her distance.

 
Merlot asked Enzo, “How am I doing?” Enzo replied, “You doing great!” Merlot said, “I’d better go turn on the charm with Dad, though.” She hopped over to the couch where Dad was reading.

 
Merlot was a very “3D bunny,” meaning she wasn’t afraid of heights or jumping up on things. She already knew Dad wouldn’t hurt her, so she just hopped up onto the couch. “Hi there!” she thought, ears straight up, putting on the cutest look she could muster – which was pretty darned cute!
Dad looked up and said, “Well, hi there!” It was rare for the rabbits to hop up on the couch with him, so this surprised him. Merlot thought, “So, Dad, could I be a permanent member of the House of Buns?”

As hard as it was to resist her cuteness, Dad replied, “Well, if it was up to me, I’d say yes. But you have to get Enzo’s and Abigail’s approval, since you’d be sharing their space.” Merlot was confident she could do that. She thought, “OK, I’ll work on it. Just give me a little time.” She nuzzled Dad’s hand a bit before jumping off the couch and running back to Enzo. “Progress!” she reported, “I just need your approval, and then I’ll work on Abigail.”
