Chapter 57 - Buddies
Late one night, Dad was giving the boys, Mocha and Hobo, their nightly treats and pets when he noticed the fur around Mocha’s left eye was matted. “What’s up with your eye?” asked Dad. Mocha didn’t like to complain, but his eye had been tearing up and he was having trouble keeping the fur clean.
Dad took Mocha to the kitchen and set him on a towel on the counter. He filled a cup with warm water and, dipping his fingers in the water, wetted the fur around Mocha’s eye to rinse it. Once it was thoroughly wet, he blotted up the water using some tissues. Then he fluffed Mocha’s fur to let it air dry. “There, that should help,” said Dad. Mocha looked at Dad and thought, “Thanks, Dad.” Dad announced, “We’d better take you to the vet and get that checked out.” Mocha wasn’t crazy about going to the vet, but he trusted Dad.
Being a bonded pair, Dad brought Hobo along with Mocha to keep him company for the ride over to the vet. Mocha always felt better when his buddy was nearby. The two of them were thrown together and they became instant friends. Now, eight years later, they were virtually inseparable.
Hobo sat on the examination table and waited patiently with Dad while the vet took Mocha in the back to flush his tear ducts. A few minutes later, the vet returned with Mocha and set him on the table next to Hobo. She explained, “He has an eye infection. Give him a drop of antibiotics in his eye every day and keep the fur around his eye clean.”
Meanwhile, Hobo looked at Mocha and noticed his eye was red. “What happened to your eye, Mocha?” he asked. Mocha replied, “They washed it.” Hobo was concerned about his buddy. “Here, I’ll clean it for you!” he said. Hobo began licking Mocha’s eye. Mocha sat still and let his friend take care of him. It was comforting for him.
Dad shook his head in amazement. “They know, don’t they?” he said to the vet. When Hobo was finished, Dad placed them in the carrier, together. Mocha snuggled up next to Hobo for the ride home. Buddies.

Hobo takes care of his buddy at the vet.
