Chapter 295 - Christmas at the HoB
After a night of fun exploring their stockings, Christmas arrived at the House of Buns. It was time to see what presents Santa Bun had brought.
Bentley had been a very good boy this year. He was always quiet in the morning so as not to wake up Dad. He always gave Dad pet time first thing in the morning and last thing at night. He was even a good watch bun. When a stranger from the pest company appeared on the deck one morning, he thumped to alert Dad.
“Look what Santa Bun brought you!” exclaimed Dad. It was a bright blue Lotus Emira. Dad explained, “It’s your new treat mobile!” When Bentley first moved in, Dad gave him a black Viper because, as Dad had explained, “Most bunnies get a condo. You have a penthouse under the bed. So you might as well have a car, instead!” Every day, Bentley hopped in to get his treats. Bentley hopped onto the seat to check out his new ride. Dad observed, “You look very handsome in it!”
Sometimes, the best gifts are the simplest gifts. Mocha and Hobo loved bunstruction projects. Santa Bun brought them a large Small Pet Select hay box. The two buns wasted no time chewing and ripping at the box. Inside, they found a willow wreath. It was their favorite.
For Enzo and Merlot, Santa Bun brought them a little bed. The two of them ran over to investigate. “What dis is?” asked Enzo. Merlot replied, “Dad said it’s a bed for sleeping.” Enzo looked it over, “How do it work? Do we sleep on it?” The two rabbits jumped on top and explored. Then they both hopped off and looked under the bed. Merlot suggested, “Maybe we sleep under it!” Enzo squeezed under the bed, but it was a tight fit. “Dis too small for me!” he said as he slithered out from underneath. Merlot, who was much smaller, slithered under and looked around. She popped her head out and declared, “Works for me! I like it!”
The box for Bentley’s new car was still sitting in the living room. Enzo ran over to it and began tearing at it with his teeth. As Dad walked by, he looked up and asked, “Can I haves it?” Dad laughed. Like most kids, Enzo liked the box that the toy came in more than the toy. “Sure,” said Dad. He cut a couple of holes in the box so Enzo could slither inside. Enzo loved his new hidey box.
Abigail, who had been watching all this, thought she got the best gift of all. She got the gift of life! She survived Thymoma and then a broken leg. She stared up at Dad. She thought, “I have something to give you.” Dad sensed she wanted to be picked up. He lifted her up and laid down on the couch with her on his chest. Normally, Abigail was not a snuggler and would jump off. But this Christmas, she gave Dad the best gift a rabbit could give – she snuggled with him.
“I love you sweetheart,” he said softly, as their hearts melted together.
