Chapter 44 - Christmas Cheer
Enzo stared up at his pretty Christmas tree sitting on the shelf. He always liked the festive colors at this time of year. He thought about Auntie Heather, who was by herself recovering from surgery at the rehab facility and wondered, “Dad, how long will Heather be der?”
Dad replied, “Well, at least until January 3rd. Probably longer.” Enzo, always the kind-hearted bun, thought, “She don’t have Christmas der. Can we bring her a tree?” Dad thought for a moment and said, “Well, yes, I suppose we can. It’s close to Christmas, so they’re hard to find, but I’ll see what I can do.”
A couple of days later, Dad brought home a miniature tree and decorated it. He managed to scrounge up some bunny ornaments, a tree topper, and some glass balls. After he decorated the tree, he looked at Enzo and asked, “This is for Auntie Heather. What do you think?” Enzo looked at the tree, all lit up with clear lights and ornaments glinting in the light. “Dat look beautiful!” he pronounced.
The next afternoon, Dad rounded up Enzo and Merlot and placed them in the carrier. Merlot thumped. She was not too sure about this. Snuggled up against Enzo, she said, “I’m scared. Where are we going? Are we going to the vet?” Enzo reassured his girlfriend, “Relax, Merlot. It not a bad thing. We go give Auntie Heather some Christmas cheer. She give good pets!” Merlot relaxed a bit. She always felt braver when she was with Enzo.
A short drive later, they arrived at the rehab facility. The three of them put on their Santa hats and headed in to Heather’s room. “Merry Christmas!” said Dad. Heather was so excited to see them, especially little Merlot. Although she helped with her rescue, she had never actually met Merlot before. She gave Merlot a hug and set her in her lap next to Enzo.
“Enzo wanted you to have some Christmas cheer,” explained Dad. He set up the tree on a dresser so she could see it from her bed and rigged up a remote control so she could turn it on and off without having to get up. “It looks lovely,” she said, “Thank you Enzo!”
After awhile, the buns relaxed. Merlot closed her eyes as Auntie Heather gave them pets. Merlot said to Enzo, “You’re right. She DOES give good pets!” Enzo replied, “See! I told ya.”
Enzo was happy. Auntie Heather’s room looked much more festive now!
