Belinda Says Hay: “A Valentine’s Poem”

Hello. It's Belinda.

How was your Valentine's Day? I hope you had an extra treat or a hug. Or both.

I had "a lot" of treats and one hug. Fine with me.

I'm not a big fan of snuggling. Too  hot. There's a reason I shed so much.

But my roommate likes to hold me sometimes so I gave her a hug for Valentine's Day. It lasted about 30 seconds. Everyone was happy.

My boyfriend's companion gave her a Valentine's gift too. More on that in a minute.

First I have to make an announcement.

The special Valentine's snacks are "flying out of the warehouse." Once they're gone you have to wait until next year to buy them.

So if you want to try the strawberry rose healthy snackers or the Valentine's herbal medley you need to "hop to it." I'm not trying to be pushy. This is part of my job.

Anyway, a lot of you have been asking about "Little Fang." Also known as my boyfriend's companion.

She is feeling better and we moved back to the bottom level. And she is back to her "antics."

So it didn't surprise me when, early this week, I woke to her yelling.

"Hey!"

It was 2 a.m.

"Hey!"

I ignored her.

There was silence for a bit. Then she said it.

"What word rhymes with 'purple'?"

Turns out she was writing a poem for our roommate. Who she calls "foster mom." I just let it go.

She worked on the poem for a few hours every day. She asked me to type it on my laptop but I had to say no. "For business use only."

So she used hay pieces to write her poem on the floor inside her pen. Which is covered in pee pads. Not the best "stationery," if you know what I mean.

I couldn't make out the letters so Little Fang read it out loud to me:

"Violets are purple.

Rose stems are thick.

Thank you for helping me

when I was sick."

My roommate is sentimental so I knew she would like it.

On Friday morning, she sang "Happy Valentine's Day" as she walked downstairs with our breakfast.

She headed straight to my boyfriend's companion's pen and stopped, holding one plate in each hand.

I noticed her eyes were shiny. Like she was up too late again. She stood so still I wondered if she was reading the "hay writing."

But she wasn't looking at the floor. She was staring at my boyfriend's companion.

"I'm so glad you're with us, Little Bat. I love you and I love your bat ears."

After we ate our breakfast, my roommate climbed into the pen. She picked up Little Fang and they had a hug that went on and on.

They looked sleepy and content but it made me itchy just to watch.

But that's the nice thing about Valentine's Day. "Something for everyone."

PS: Please remember to send your "bonded pet" photo to my Celebration of Love photo gallery.

Tell a friend.

Belinda
