Belinda Says Hay: “Mother’s Day Gift”

Belinda Says Hay spokesrabbit blog, "Mother's Day Gift" May 12, 2024

Hello. It's Belinda.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone who celebrates. It's a good day for extra treats. I hope you get a few.

Before I write about that I want to thank everyone for the nice messages you wrote about my blog last week. In case you missed it, I called it "Abigail's 1st Anniversary."

Abigail was my "partner in crime." It's not the same without her. Sometimes you need to talk about your writing with another rabbit. Also hay.

Anyway, I'm supposed to cover Mother's Day today. Which I'll do but with a "twist."

This year we're celebrating "Roommates Day." The whole thing is Little Fang's idea.

She's always trying to give presents to our roommate. She's thoughtful about that sort of thing.

For example, a few years ago Little Fang came up with a plan to give her a surprise for Easter. We pitched in to her some blueberries and I couldn't believe what happened next.

Our roommate immediately went outside and gave them to a bird.

I learned an important lesson that day. "Eat the blueberries yourself."

So our first priority this year was to pick the right gift. Something our roommate would want to keep.

Little Fang and I did a little "brainstorm" and came up with a list.

Gifts for our roommate:

  • treat (bread or popcorn)
  • quiet shoes (extra padding)
  • alarm clock (extra loud for not missing morning chores)
  • basement refrigerator (for spring mix and other greens)
  • "tunnel garden" for back yard

You might be wondering about that last one.

My roommate needs a hobby in my opinion. Gardening is a good one. You can grow herbs and romaine and other lettuces. The tunnel is a "roof" that keeps the deer out.

Sorry deer but you can eat the hedges. Come on.

There was only one thing wrong with our list of gift ideas. Little Fang and I don't have any cash.

It's true that sometimes I find coins on the floor. A nickel or dime falls out of a pocket when my roommate pulls laundry from the dryer. She doesn't seem to notice but I do.

I can hear a penny hit the ground from a mile away. I know the value of money. "It adds up."

I keep all the coins I find in a secret spot on the bottom floor. So far I have seventeen cents.

I broke the news to Little Fang and she stared at me for a long time. Then she said, "I have an idea."

She turned and walked across her pen toward the English. He was napping as usual.

I pretended to work under the utility sink but in reality I was "spying" on them.

"No. I don't want to spend any of my money." That was the English.

Little Fang said something about how our roommate deserves a nice gift.

"Well maybe Belinda can give her some loops from her stash."

I felt my ears get hot.

First of all where did he get money.

Secondly loops are for rabbits. Also don't talk about my stash.

Well that's where we are with the "Roommate's Day" situation.

By the way this is a professional blog because it mentions lettuce.

If you get your roommates gifts, let me know  in the comments. Also let me know how you pay for it.

Sincerely,

Belinda
