Belinda Says Hay: “Why Do Rabbits Lick?”

Belinda Says Hay spokesrabbit blog. "Why Do Rabbits Lick?" July 30 2023

Hello. It's Belinda.

This is a quick blog today. The last few have gone "over the word limit."

Or so I hear.

I don't count words. I didn't know I was supposed to.

Anyway, this blog will be shorter than usual because I need your help. Then I'll have a "part two" next week.

The topic is "Why do rabbits lick?"

Belinda the spokesrabbit #ModelChallenge

This photo doesn't have anything to do with the topic.

But I found it in my files while I was doing research the other day.  I just had to use it. Look at my fur.

OK back to business.

Last week, my friend Julie K wrote a comment on the company Facebook page.

She asked me this question about rabbit behavior:

"I was wondering if you could do a blog on bunnies licking their roommates?

Poppy has a habit of going under our bed and pokes her head out for pets. The petting lasts a long time and then she starts licking my hand.

I hear this is 'grooming' and a sign of affection.

Could you give us your thoughts on this?"

I told her that Poppy sounds like a real "gem." And that she did an excellent job training Julie K.

Some rabbits don't make time to train their roommates, if you know what I mean. I wish I had done a better job with training mine. Maybe she'd keep certain rabbits out of my space.

There's no reason to "jam" every rabbit in the house into one room. Especially if part of that room is an office.

Ignore what I just wrote. It has nothing to do with this blog.

The point of this blog is learning why rabbits lick their humans. And why they lick other rabbits.

Well before I start making "wild guesses" about Poppy and all the others, I want to ask all of you first.

If you're a rabbit, why do you go around licking your roommate?

I'm not trying to be rude. It's just "research."

Leave your feedback in the comments. Or email me at

Thank you in advance.

I know this has nothing to do with hay but it's still important.
