CHAPTER 96 – Living In the Moment
Abigail looked over at Dad. His brow was furrowed as he stared intently at the ‘puter screen, as she called it. He had been sitting there for several hours now, and Abigail thought it was about time he took a break. Besides, she wanted a pet.
She tooth-chattered at Dad.
Nothing. Dad just kept typing on the keyboard.
“Hmmm,” she thought, “I guess I need to get his attention.” Abigail stood up, stretched, and hopped over to Dad’s feet and bumped his leg. “Break time!” she suggested.
“Oh, hi baby. How are you?” asked Dad. But he kept on working.
“He’s not getting the message,” thought Abigail. She bolted off into the other room, circled the dining table twice, dashed back through the living room, took a lap around the couch, and stopped by Dad’s feet. That got his attention.
Dad laughed, “Well hello there! Do you want some attention?” Dad reached out to pet Abigail, but Abigail ran back to her spot by the window. She knew Dad would follow her.
Sure enough, Dad got up from his work spot and laid down in front of Abigail. He placed his hand over her head and asked, “May I pet you?” Abigail granted him permission by lowering her head.
As Dad massaged Abigail’s head, all his other thoughts evaporated. For the next five minutes, the entire world disappeared and it was just the two of them. Dad knew it was important to not just take time for Abigail, but make time and be really present with her.
Abigail thought, “Dad, life is short. It goes by so quickly. You have to stop and smell the flowers—or pet the bunny! It’s good for you!”
Dad studied all the features on his little chestnut fluff ball—her big brown eyes, her tiny little ears, her cute little tail. Every hair on her coat was perfectly in place. She was a miracle of nature. “You are so cute,” he swooned, “I just adore you!”
Abigail closed her eyes and purred. She was happy. She got Dad to live in the moment.
