CHAPTER 53 – Make Every Day Count
Abigail stood up on her back feet and leaned against the wall, peering up at a photo hanging above her. It was an animal, but it wasn’t her. “I wonder who that is?” she thought. Just then, Dad passed by and saw the inquisitive look on her face. “That’s Miss Bean,” explained Dad, “She was my cat before you came along. She was the love of my life for 14 years.”
Dad knelt down and gave Abigail a pet while he explained, “You know Abigail, a lot of the reason I dote on you so much is because of her. When she passed away, I was devastated. The only thing that comforted me was knowing that I had given her a really good life. And the only regret I had was that I had often pushed her away when she wanted my attention because I was busy working. It made me realize that our furry friends are only with us for a short while, so it’s important to make every day count. When I adopted you, I made a commitment to make you a priority in my life. To not just spend time with you when I had time, but to make time to spend with you. At the end of our journey together, I want to know I did everything possible to give you a happy life and for you to know that you were loved and cherished.”
Abigail tugged at Dad’s pant leg as if to say, “Don’t worry, Dad, rabbits are pretty smart. We judge humans by their actions, not by their words. I know you love me.”
