CHAPTER 148 – Shared Rituals
Abigail’s eyes were closed. She could feel Dad’s fingers slowly stroking her ears. Even though they were short little ears, they felt long and luxurious when Dad stroked them slowly. In the background, she heard the familiar melody of Christina Perri’s song “Thousand Years” (or “Thousand Ears” as Abigail liked to call it) playing.
“All along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more”
Ever since she first came to live with Dad, he played this song and gave her a massage at the end of the day. It was “their song”. She recognized it as soon as the first few notes played.
“Dad, do other bunnies and their humans do this, too?” she wondered.
Dad replied, “Well, Abigail. I doubt all bun parents do this, but I do know that your friends Raisinet and Goober listen to this every night, ever since their mom learned that we do this. She plays your video on her phone for them and they watch it.”
Abigail thought, “Really? That’s nice.”
It was important to Dad that Abigail went to sleep knowing that she was loved and cherished. This was his way of showing it.
Abigail just chattered her teeth in contentment. She wished all bunnies could share this ritual.
