Chapter 21 - Beat The Heat
Summer had arrived at the House of Buns. Merlot sprawled out next to Enzo. Being as this was her first summer, she didn’t know what to make of it. She asked Enzo, “Is it always going to be this hot? It’s hot in this fur coat!”
Enzo replied, “Tell me about it. I haves a mane! No, it not always dis hot. Only a few days. But don’t worry. Dad got a cold air machine for Abigail when she came here. We can use it now. I ask.”
Enzo loped over to Dad, who was sitting at his desk, absorbed in his work. Dad looked down at Enzo and asked, “What’s up little guy?” Enzo looked up at him with his pretty blue eyes and thought, “Dad. We hot. Can you turn on da cold air machine?”
It was warm for Dad, so he knew it was worse for the buns, since they had fur coats. “You want the air conditioner on?” he asked. Enzo thought, “Yes!”
“OK,” said Dad. Enzo watched as he picked up the remote control and pressed a button. Sure enough, the cold air machine began humming. Enzo ran back to Merlot.
“Dis da best spot!” he told her. Dad had aimed the vents towards the floor, and after years of experience, Enzo knew exactly where to sit to get the best effect. The cool breeze blew through his mane.
Merlot sat down next to him. She could feel the cool air waft through her coat. “This is nice!” she said, “You know all the tricks!”
Their water bowl sat between them, just in case they got thirsty. In case the power went out, Dad kept a generator on hand to power the air conditioner, and if that failed, then he’d resort to cold tiles for them to lay on and ice packs to lean against.
The two buns parked contentedly in their spot for the rest of the afternoon. Life was a breeze.
