Chapter 34 - Advanced Treat Begging
Enzo was nibbling on a slice of banana while Merlot was crunching on some lacinato kale when Dad came into the living room carrying his breakfast. Merlot watched Dad sit down on the floor beside the coffee table to eat his breakfast. “Come on, Enzo! It’s treat time!” she exclaimed.
Merlot bounded over to Dad with Enzo following close behind. He was proud of his treat-begging protégé, who took her role as Head Treat Beggar quite seriously. The two circled Dad and hopped across his legs. “Treats! We want treats!” thought Merlot.
Dad said, “OK, hang on. Let me put the treat platter together!” As quickly as he could, he assembled a treat platter for Enzo and pulled out a Berry Loop for Merlot. Merlot was so exuberant, she couldn’t wait. She hopped up onto the couch next to Dad’s head. “Treat, please!” she begged. Dad laughed. It took Abigail months to work up the courage to climb the stairs to get on the couch. Merlot just hopped up on the couch without even thinking about it.
Making sure he didn’t appear to play favorites, he set Enzo’s treat platter on the floor while simultaneously handing Merlot a loop with his teeth. Merlot grabbed the loop with her teeth, being careful not to bite Dad’s lip, and hopped off the couch to enjoy her treasure. Meanwhile, Enzo grabbed a piece of dried mango and began munching.
With the feeding frenzy over, Dad settled down to enjoy his breakfast and coffee with his little fur babies by his side. He loved starting his days like this.
Merlot is so excited, she hops onto the couch to get her treat.
