Hello. It’s Belinda.
I had the best Valentine’s Day of my life and you will never guess who was behind it.
It all started Thursday morning. My roommate was sitting at the dining room table with her laptop and I was half-napping in my digging corner. Felt like just another day, if you want to know the truth.
I was supposed to be working on hay reviews. But I was preoccupied with all the drama going on around the HR letter. Waiting for my notary to get back to me and wondering if his friend-of-a-friend had come up with a solution.
Last thing I thinking about was romantic holidays. Leaving that to the “lovebirds” on the bottom level.
In fact, I’m glad the English and my boyfriend’s companion have been using that space during the day. Gives me an excuse to work on the kitchen level, where I can watch my roommate.
I’ve been trying to sneak a peek at her laptop. See what’s on the screen.
Because that HR letter said in black and white that my roommate is a “Small Pet Select employee.” Which I'm still trying to digest.
Somehow I never noticed that my roommate works for the same company I do. She has not mentioned it and I am not asking. But every morning it feels like the start of Daylight Saving Time, if you know what I mean. Disorienting.
Anyway, I am not going to let my roommate’s secrets ruin my good news.
So back to Valentine’s Day and the big surprise. Around 10 a.m., my roommate and I heard a beep. The delivery truck was outside.
The first thing I thought was that Josh from the warehouse had shipped a special gift to me. But he sent me a box of Valentine’s treats a few weeks ago. Did that “rascal” really send me another surprise?
It was a surprise all right.
My roommate brought the box into the house and read the label.
“It’s for you Belinda. It’s from Jessica in HR.”
I froze.
Now what?
My roommate sat on the floor beside me and opened the box. She reached in a took out a large bag of Zen Tranquility herbal mix. We looked at each other.
She reached back into the box and removed a letter. She put it on the floor and stood.
“Let me know if you need anything.”
She walked away. I have to give her credit for that. I needed some breathing room.
Then I read the letter. Which didn’t take long because it was only four sentences.
“Dear Belinda,
Great news: I found a loophole!
The Human Resources laws do not apply to you because you are not a human.
I hope this herb mix helps you to relax and have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
You deserve it.
Sincerely, Jessica”
I read it over and over. I couldn’t believe it.
All along, I thought this whole situation was payback for the “stunt” I pulled a year ago. When I hired Abigail without telling HR or anyone else for that matter.
I was in such a good mood I ate the entire bag of Zen Tranquility mix. Which means I did exactly what the latest HR letter told me to do.
I had a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
