Chapter 84 - Life Goes On
Mocha looked up as Dad “beamed aboard” the starship Bunnyprise with his breakfast tray. Although Hobo was gone, he still expected to race him to the food tray, like they had done so many times. Old habits die hard.
It was the same for Dad. He set down the tray with its two heaping piles of greens and explained, “Mocha, I forgot Hobo isn’t here. I prepared two portions of food. Sorry. It’s a buffet. Just eat what you want.”
Mocha dove into the tray with relish. He started with the banana slices and worked his way through the piles of greens. Without Hobo, there was nothing stopping him. He hopped onto the tray and kept mowing his way across it.
A half hour later, Dad came by to check on Mocha. He had read that sometimes, when rabbits lose their bondmate, they go into depression and stop eating. To his surprise, Mocha had cleaned off the tray! Dad exclaimed, “Mocha! You ate ALL the food – two large bunny portions! I’m sorry. Have you not been getting enough to eat? No wonder you’re so thin! I thought it was just because you were getting old.”
Mocha thought, “Well, Hobo liked to eat, so I let him. But now, I can have it all!”
From then on, Dad kept preparing double portions for Mocha. He also got all the willow, alfalfa, and treats he wanted. Little by little, he began gaining weight and felt less bony.
“Do you miss your buddy?” asked Dad. Mocha thought, “I miss snuggling with him. But at least I get all the food to myself now!” Dad was relieved. Mocha was going to be OK.

Mocha mows his way across through the food tray.
