Chapter 67 –  Muffin

Chapter 67 - Muffin

Dad sat on the floor after breakfast, reading his messages. He had a sad look on his face. Enzo, who was a very sensitive rabbit, could always tell when something was upsetting Dad. He hopped into Dad’s lap and looked up at him with his soulful blue eyes and thought, “What matter, Dad?”

Dad gave Enzo a pet and explained, “Do you remember Muffin?” Enzo thought for a moment, and then remembered, “Was she da dwarf rabbit dat asked Abigail for help?” Dad replied, “Yes, she’s the one.”

Not long after Abigail had undergone radiation treatment to cure her thymoma, Muffin wrote to her [click here to read about it] saying she had the same thing, but her parents didn’t have the money to start treatment for her, and she was scared. Abigail, who had a soft spot for other dwarf rabbits, hopped into action and asked her fans for help. They raised enough money [click here to read more] to get her treatment started. Her parents were able to come up with the rest of the money later. The treatment worked! Just like Abigail, her thymoma went away and she went on to live her life.

Dad said sadly, “Muffin’s dad told me she just passed away today. She was around nine or ten years old. Just like Abigail, they noticed her starting to go downhill recently. Her dad said, ‘We were prepared for it, but it still feels like a big hole in our hearts. She made her peace with us on her last day and we were happy to be with her the last moments of her life.’”

Memories of Abigail’s last day with Dad came rushing back as he fought back tears. Like anyone who has lost their rabbit, he understood what they meant. “Enzo,” said Dad, “I need a hug.” Enzo obliged and let Dad pick him up and hug him, just like he did in those days after Abigail had left.

Dad imagined that the two dwarfs, Abigail and Muffin, would finally meet on the other side of the rainbow bridge. Abigail would probably teach Muffin how to be a rabbit angel. Her parents wanted Abigail to pass along a message to Muffin, “We hope you are enjoying running down the rainbow road and eating all the bananas and apples you can have! You’re in our hearts with every breath, Muffin. The world may never understand how deeply we miss you, but we carry your memory with love that never fades. Love always, Mom and Dad.”

Enzo reminded Dad, “Day lucky! Day got almost two more years wif Muffin tanks to Abigail and her fans! Her fans are da best!” Dad said, “You’re right, Enzo, they are!” Muffin’s dad added, “Thank you to everyone who supported us through those hard times. Remember to love your pets unconditionally. They might be in our lives for a short time, but we are in their lives until the end.’”

Enzo looked up at Dad and thought, “Dat true.” On this occasion, Dad hugged Enzo even tighter than normal. Enzo didn’t mind. He understood.

Like Abigail, Muffin was a survivor of thymoma.
