Chapter 61 - Reserve Cuteness
One morning, Enzo and Merlot were snuggled together in their morning spot when Dad came into the room. “Good morning, guys!” he said as he knelt down to give them a pet. “Aww, you guys look so cute together. Could you be any cuter?” he asked as he petted them.
Enzo thought, “Ya, we can be cuter!” Enzo explained to Merlot, “Rabbit rule number 1 is always have some reserve cuteness. You never know when you might need it. Like, when begging for treats.” Merlot took note.
A little while later, Dad sat down on the floor to have breakfast. The treat beggars came running over for treats. As Dad leaned over to give out a loop, he sniffed and said, “Something doesn’t smell so good. Merlot, do you have poopy butt?” Merlot didn’t answer. She quickly grabbed the loop and ran off to eat it.
Dad let Merlot finish her loop. When she came back for another, he picked her up and said, “Let’s see if you have poopy butt.” He turned her over on her back and observed, “Yep, just what I thought!” Merlot squirmed and turned over, wiping her butt across Dad’s sweatshirt. Remembering Enzo’s advice, she pulled out her extra cute look and looked up at Dad with her big brown eyes and thought, “No, not anymore! I wiped it off!”
Being a team, Enzo wanted to help his girlfriend by distracting Dad. He stood up on his back feet, grabbed the paper towel under Dad’s breakfast plate and gave it a tug, spilling Dad’s breakfast all over Dad and Merlot. “Enzo!” exclaimed Dad. Enzo pulled out his reserve cuteness and looked up at Dad innocently, and thought, “What?” Not waiting for an answer, he scurried off behind the couch.
Dad said, “OK, let’s go wash your butt, Merlot. I swear, if you guys weren’t so cute…”
As Dad cleaned Merlot’s butt, she deposited a bunch of her beautiful gray fur on his black sweatshirt. Dad said, “Merlot! I think you need some brushing!” As long as he had her, he might as well groom her. Dad took her outside on the deck and brushed her in the warm sun.
“How are your nails?” he asked. Dad checked her nails. “They could use a little trim. As long as I’m holding you, let’s take care of that.” Dad carried her inside, grabbed the clippers, and went back out in the sun to trim her nails. Merlot relaxed and let Dad give her a manicure. Then, he gave her pets as she lounged in the warm sun.
Finally, Dad brought her back inside and set her down on the floor. Merlot didn’t even foot-flick him as she ran off to find Enzo. Dad grabbed the vacuum to clean up the breakfast mess. As long as he had the vacuum out, he vacuumed the rest of the upstairs. Then, he changed out of his sweatshirt.
It was past noon before he sat back down for breakfast 2.0. “Rabbits!” he sighed, “If they weren’t so cute…”

Enzo and Merlot save some reserve cuteness for certain situations...
