Chapter 101 - Return to Paradise
After two days in the hospital, Merlot couldn’t wait to go home. She heard Dad’s voice as they brought her into the examination room, “Merlot! Hi sweetie! How are you doing?” She listened as the vet gave Dad an update, “She did fine on her tooth trim. She’s eating. It’s important that she keeps eating. If she doesn’t, you’ll have to assist feed her. We’re sending her home with some Meloxicam for pain management and some Sulfatrim which is an antibiotic. She’ll need it twice a day for 10 days.” Dad rolled his eyes. He knew Merlot would not be happy with the daily medication.
As soon as they were home, Merlot ran under the bed. Enzo ran over to see her and asked, “Merlot! Where were you? Are you OK?” Merlot replied, “I was at the hospital. I’m fine. My mouth doesn’t hurt now. I can eat again!”
Sure enough, in no time, Merlot was wolfing down her favorite foods like she was starving. She was back to running zoomies. She even let Dad pick her up for her medications! Over the next three weeks, she steadily gained weight until she leveled off at her ideal weight of 3.8 pounds. And she no longer huddled by the heat register.
That night, as he gave Enzo and Merlot their pets, he said, “Enzo, you’re such a good boy. Thanks for letting me know Merlot had a problem. I’m so glad we caught it in time! And Merlot, I’m so glad you’re back to normal. I realized how important you are when we thought we might lose you!” He gave them each a kiss on the head.
Paradise was restored.
