Chapter 6 - Merlot Gets Promoted
It was mid-morning. The sun lit up the room as Enzo and Merlot sat in front of their green tray, munching on breakfast greens. Merlot watched Dad walk by with his breakfast. He sat down by the coffee table to join them.
“Oh, boy! It’s treat time!” said Merlot, excitedly. She ran over to Dad. Enzo hung back and watched his little Treat Beggar in Training. She had been his apprentice ever since she became a permanent member of Abigail’s House of Buns.
Enzo watched as Merlot stood up on her back feet and placed her front paws on Dad’s arm. “May I have a treat?” she begged. She had trained Dad well. “Sure!” he said. He knew the routine. He placed a Country Loop between his teeth and handed it to her. Merlot grabbed the loop and scampered off to munch on it.
Enzo came running over and Dad placed a red treat platter down in front of him, filled with his favorite treats. As he nibbled on his treats, he looked over at Merlot and said, “I been thinking. I busy now as ‘Resident Novelist.’ How ‘bout you be ‘Head Treat Beggar?’”
Merlot stopped crunching for a moment and looked at Enzo. “Really?” she asked. Enzo replied, “Really! I think you ready.” Merlot was honored. She said, “OK. I promise to do a good job!” Enzo knew she would. He was proud of his little assistant. She was a fast learner.
The two went back to munching on their treats.
Enzo thinks Merlot is ready to be Head Treat Beggar.
