Belinda Says Hay: “I Wish I Could … ”

Belinda Says Hay spokesrabbit blog

Hello. It's Belinda.

Did you ever find something in your house that didn’t belong to you?

I find "artifacts" all the time from other rabbits. I have no idea who these rabbits are or where they went.

Sometimes it's a bit of fur under the utility sink. Or a chew toy under the sofa. Nothing you want to chew by the time you find it. Trust me on this one.

The reason I bring this up is I've been thinking a lot about my time at the shelter.

When I was young, I lived on the city streets with some other rabbits. A nice man “rounded us up” and drove us to the shelter.

We hit the jackpot as far as shelters go.

Our room was on the second floor, away from the dogs and cats. It was mostly quiet except for all the chewing and the water bottles clanking. Sometimes you could hear a door slam or people laughing.

There was a daily routine. The volunteers and the employees would take care of breakfast and hay and water refills. They cleaned my litterbox every afternoon. They remembered to give me some exercise time in the big room.

In the evenings it was so peaceful that I was bored. But that wasn’t the worst part of being at the shelter.

The problem was not knowing what would happen next.

Would the hay run out? Would the volunteers go on vacation? How long would I be there?

I tried to stop worrying but I couldn’t help it.

Sometimes visitors would come to meet me and the other rabbits. They were always very “chatty,” even if they were by themselves.

“I wish I could take all of you home,” the visitors would say.

But they usually adopted one rabbit. Or a bonded pair.

Then one day my roommate showed up and that was the luckiest day of my life.

The second luckiest day is when I was hired to be your spokesrabbit.

My time at the shelter is one reason I try so hard to do a good job. I'm supposed to be the voice for all the rabbits who don't have blogs or email. Or roommates.

And my shelter days inspired me to create my big $1000 giveaway. On Tuesday, we'll choose the winners. Two individuals and two rescues.

I wish I could send a warehouse full of goodies to every rescue and shelter.

I wish I could bring all the animals home.

What I can do is complete the final steps of my five-year anniversary giveaway. So the winning rescues can start shopping.

It's my way of sending a bit of "home" to them.

Sincerely,

Belinda
