For some of us in the western US, have you noticed your Small Pet Select orders coming from a different location within the last few months? In June 2021, Small Pet Select added a fourth warehouse in Phoenix, Arizona! Recently, I interviewed Josh (yes, Belinda's Josh), as he got the distribution center up and running after Bill, our CEO, found the best location.

When I asked, “Why Phoenix?” Josh said, “To service our West Coast customers faster. Eighty percent of our orders travel to our California and Nevada customers faster than our 1.7 day business day shipping time out of the Phoenix location. This decision was all about customer service and increasing the speed of getting orders to customers.”
On Monday, June 7th, Josh had already hopped down to Phoenix from Louisville, KY. His first tasks were to get the keys to the new facility and unload the first truck. Additionally, Josh set up office space, the warehouse floor, and taught the two-person staff about our logistics and organizational practices. Within 10 days, the first order shipped out. Throughout June and July, Josh visited our Phoenix facility three more times to make process adjustments.
The Phoenix location has two unique characteristics. First of all, it is much smaller than our other three warehouses and technically a distribution center. Secondly, everything is pre-packaged at another Small Pet Select warehouse; nothing is manufactured in Phoenix. Therefore, all products are ready to be shipped to our valued customers. Bill is always planning, so signing a year lease gives us the flexibility to move to a larger location soon.
Josh expects visiting the Phoenix distribution center during the winter to see how things are going. I commented the winter weather is much more pleasant there than in Ellensburg or Louisville. Josh said the weather was another reason Phoenix was such an attractive location. However, he did say one of the keys to success there was a good air conditioner!
From a personal perspective, thanks to the new Phoenix facility, my three hay connoisseurs are happier than ever. Sunny Bunny said, “We get our orders much faster here in Colorado, too! I’ve been eating Small Pet Select hay and rabbit food since I arrived at my furever home in November 2017. This is the fastest we’ve ever received our Autoship and Save orders.”
