Through Abigail’s Eyes: Mirror, Mirror, On A Stick (144)

CHAPTER 144 – Mirror, Mirror, On A Stick

“Hey Bentley, how are you? Are you having a good day?” asked Dad as he breezed into the bedroom. Dad was never really sure if he was talking to Bentley or to himself, since he couldn’t easily see if Bentley was sacked out in his “penthouse burrow” under the bed.

Unlike Abigail, who was always visible no matter where she was napping, Bentley had several “hidey-spots” for napping.

Dad knelt down and placed his head on the floor and peered under the bed. “Nope, no Bentley. I guess I’m talking to myself,” he thought. He grunted as he got off the floor. Dad thought, “What I need is something like those mirrors on a stick that they use at the border to check under cars.”

Dad searched Amazon for “mirror on a stick” and sure enough, there were several options. He chose the largest round mirror he could find and a rectangular one with lights. “Let’s see if one of these works,” he thought.

A few days later, Bentley was flopped under the bed for his afternoon nap when suddenly, a couple of bright lights lit up his penthouse like search lights. “What is that?” he wondered. He jumped up and ran over to investigate.

Dad looked into the mirror to see if he could spot Bentley. Suddenly, Bentley’s nose filled the mirror. “Oh hi Mr. B. What do you think of this mirror on a stick?” Bentley was not amused. “I don’t like it! It woke me up!” he thought. To let Dad know, he grabbed the stick with his teeth and pulled it out of Dad’s hands. Dad laughed, “Oh, OK. I guess you don’t approve, huh?”

The lights didn’t help much anyway. When the mirror was at the right angle to see under the bed, the lights were shining up at the underside of the bed.

The next afternoon, Dad tried the round mirror. He peered under the bed through the mirror. There! He spotted Bentley’s ears way in the back under the bed. Bentley continued napping, undisturbed.

Dad had found his solution. Now he didn’t have to lie down on the floor every time he wanted to check if Bentley was in his burrow!

Bentley disapproves of this mirror on a stick and pulls it out of Dad's hands.
