CHAPTER 201 – Taking Care of Dad
Abigail sat in her spot by the window and watched Dad deliver the dinner trays to all the buns at the House of Buns. As the self-appointed “household manager”, it was her job to make sure things stayed on schedule – meal times, nap times, and play times.
Fortunately, Dad required very little management. He was very good at sticking to a schedule. For six years now, she had watched him day in and day out deliver breakfast, leave them alone to nap for most of the day, deliver dinner, and then spend play time with all the bunnies. He always made sure they never ran out of hay and greens. Every night, he’d vacuum and change their litter boxes.
And finally, he always ended the day by giving Abigail her pets to “their song”, A Thousand Ears. No. Matter. What.
After their petting session that night, Abigail opened her eyes. There was Dad, nose-to-nose with her. Abigail thought, “Dad, you’re really good at taking care of all of us bunnies. You feed us, clean up after us, pet us, give us treats, and when we get sick, you save us! But who takes care of you?”
Dad just smiled and gave her a “scritch” on her head and said, “No one, sweetie. I just take care of myself.”
Abigail paused for a moment to think, while she enjoyed the extra scritch. Then she thought, “Dad, I know bunnies aren’t allowed in restaurants, so I can’t take you out. Being the ‘resident novelist for Small Pet Select,’ I want you to take some of my earnings and treat yourself to a nice dinner on me. You deserve it.”
Dad’s heart melted. He leaned forward and gave her a kiss on the head and said, “Aww, Abigail, that’s so sweet. Thank you. I love you!”
Abigail thought, “I love you, too, Dad. You’re my hero!”
Abigail knows it's important to take care of Dad once in a while.
