Chapter 123 - The Dance
Merlot and Dino laid beside each other with the ex-pen fence between them. Dino asked, “I like living here. I like Dad. He’s kind. I trust him.” Merlot agreed, “Ya, I like living here, too. Dad’s a good egg. He takes good care of all the bunnies, inside and outside the House of Buns.”
Dino asked, “How did you get to live here?” Merlot recounted her experience, “I was just supposed to spend the night here. Dad was taking me to the vet for the shelter. He put me in the same pen you’re in now. Enzo came to meet me, and it was love at first sight. I wanted to stay. Dad said he had no objection, but I had to get Enzo’s and Abigail’s approval. Enzo was easy. Abigail took a little longer. She wasn’t so sure about having another female live here. Eventually, we came to terms and Dad let me stay!”
Dino said, “Dad said the same thing to me. He said he was OK with me, but that I had to get your approval.” Merlot said, “Well, as long as we understand that I am the boss, that would be OK.”
The more time they spent together, the more Merlot got used to the fuzzy Enzo.
Every day, Dad opened the gate to the ex-pen and let the two of them spend some time face-to-face. There was always some chasing, but it wasn’t overly aggressive.
Dino ran out of the pen and Merlot chased after him. They did the “bonding dance” for awhile. Merlot chased Dino. Dino chased Merlot. They ran towards each other. One jumped in the air while the other ran underneath. It looked like a ballet to Dad. Then they’d rest, apart from each other, but within eyesight. They established a mutual coexistence.
One night, Dad laid on the floor and petted Merlot and asked, “How’s it going sweetie? Are you OK? To tell the truth, you don’t seem very happy. It seems like you want to be an only bun. But when I look at the videos of you and Enzo together, I see how happy you two were together. It might be the same with Dino.”
Merlot thought, “I don’t know yet, Dad. We are still working it out. It takes time. It’s not always love at first sight, you know.”
Dad said, “Well, I have to go away for a week. Let’s see how things are when I get back.”
