Gizmo’s Art of Doing Nothing: National Relaxation Day

By now, you probably know that I love holidays, right?

Christmas? Sparkly.

National Cucumber Day? Delicious!

But this Saturday, August 15, may be my new favorite: National Relaxation Day!

Honestly, I can't believe it took hoomans this long to give relaxing its own holiday. Guinea pigs like me have been celebrating it every day for, well, forever.

I know relaxing sounds easy, but actually it’s an art. Guinea pigs are masters of finding the coziest spots, taking the perfect nap, and knowing exactly when it's the reight time to stretch out and do absolutely nothing.

So, let me tell you how to make sure your piggy has the best National Relaxation Day ever!

1. Learn What a Relaxed Piggy Looks Like

Before you can help your guinea pig relax, you need to know the difference between a relaxed piggy and a stressed one.

When I'm feeling happy and comfortable, you might see me lying down, sometimes stretched out with my little legs behind me. I might even let out a content little purr while Big Momma gently pets me.

But if I'm hiding all the time, freezing in place, chattering my teeth, refusing my favorite snacks, or acting nervous, something might not be quite right. We like to hide to relax, but guinea pigs also hide when we're uncomfortable. It's important to pay close attention to the little clues we give you. Our body language can tell you a lot!

2. Give Me a Cozy Place to Hide

Every relaxation expert knows that sometimes the best way to recharge is to find a cozy hideout, take your hat off, and simply let the rest of the world wait.

One of my favorite places to chill is my chewable Tiny Paws Seagrass Tent. It gives me a safe, cozy hideout where I can take a nap, enjoy a snack, or simply watch the world go by.

Guinea pigs feel safest when we have places to hide. Having a cozy retreat helps us feel secure, especially if something startles us.

3. Keep Things Nice and Quiet

I don't mind a little excitement every now and then, and I love to zoom and popcorn when I’m having fun. But loud televisions, barking dogs, yelling, or lots of unexpected commotion can make us guinea pigs feel nervous.

Big Momma tries to keep my habitat in a calm part of the house where I can relax without too many surprises. Sometimes she even quietly plays my favorite gentle music.

After all, it's much easier to nap when nobody is vacuuming next to your cage.

4. Stick to a Routine

While yes, we piggies need variety for enrichment, we are also creatures of habit. (We’re complicated critters!)

I like knowing when breakfast is coming, when it's floor time, and when Big Momma usually stops by with fresh hay. In fact, that’s why I often wheek when I hear her enter the room. I know what’s coming!

A predictable routine helps me feel safe because I know what to expect each day.

Besides, if breakfast is five minutes late, I begin filing formal complaints.

5. Remember That Relaxing Is Good for You, Too

Here's a little secret. When Big Momma sits beside my habitat, quietly watching me munch hay or take a nap, she starts relaxing too.

Maybe that's why people enjoy spending time with guinea pigs so much. We have a way of reminding everyone to slow down occasionally.

So this National Relaxation Day, why not grab a comfy chair, spend a little time with your favorite piggy, and practice doing absolutely nothing together?

Speaking of which, I think I'd better go practice napping before Saturday's holiday.

Take it easy,

Love,

Gizmo
