Hay friends!
Know what time it is? Snack time!
To be fair, for me it's always snack time! At least when it comes to hay. I need it all day, every day. (I'll tell you all about that in a sec!)
Big Momma has done a lot of research on what foods to give me. I must say, she does a wonderful job of keeping my tummy happy!
But even experienced guinea pig parents like Big Momma still have questions sometimes. When she's unsure about whether a food is safe for me, she checks her favorite guinea pig snack and treat guide.
Me? I have a much simpler system. If it smells delicious and Big Momma puts it in my bowl, I'm all in!
Here are some of my favorites.
1. Unlimited Timothy Hay
For piggies like me, hay isn't just a snack. It's the most important part of my diet. It helps keep my tummy happy and moving properly while wearing down my constantly growing teeth. We should always have hay nearby and ready for snacking!
I nibble on hay throughout the day (and night), and I always appreciate a fresh refill.

2. Vitamin C-Packed Pellets
Unlike hoomans, we guinea pigs can't make our own vitamin C. That means we need to get it from our diet every single day.
Big Momma's favorite? Small Pet Select Guinea Pig Food Pellets, of course. They're packed with vitamin C to help keep me healthy, active, and popcorning with joy.
Can you guess what their main ingredient is? Yep. Hay. That's important too!
But pellets are only a small part of my diet. Big Momma says I can only have about 1/8 cup each day.
Bummer.

Big Momma's Bonus Tip: Every snack deserves a side dish! So she places my pellets in an edible seagrass bowl. She calls it "enrichment." I call it extra snackiness!
3. Fresh Vegetables
Vegetables add variety, enrichment, and extra nutrients to my meals. Some of my favorites include:
- Leafy greens
- Bell peppers
- Cilantro
- Cucumber
- Cauliflower
- Broccoli
When Big Momma gives me new foods to try, she always starts slowly to make sure my tummy doesn't hurt.
4. Foods I Avoid
Just because something looks tasty doesn't mean it's safe for us to eat!
Foods that should stay off my plate include:
- Chocolate
- Dairy products
- Meat
- Onions and garlic
- Potatoes
- Avocado
- Iceberg lettuce
- Sugary or salty human snacks
- Nuts and seeds
These foods can cause digestive upset or even serious health problems.
5. Treats
I'll be honest. Treats are my favorite. But Big Momma says I can only have a little bit and not every day. As she always reminds me, "They're called treats for a reason!"
And my treats are a lot different than Big Momma's. She loves a big piece of chocolate cake. Me? Give me Pea Flakes or Healthy Snackers any day!
Big Momma likes them because she knows they're made with ingredients she can trust. I just know they're nummy.
That's not to say I don't enjoy an occasional small bite of something sweet. A tiny piece of strawberry, apple, or even carrot can be a delicious surprise. But treats made with added sugar, dairy, artificial dyes, or other ingredients meant for hoomans should stay off my menu.
As unfair as it may seem, moderation is part of staying healthy.
Besides, having treats only once in a while makes them feel even more special!
Big Momma's Quick Snack Guide:
- Unlimited hay is a must. It supports healthy digestion and helps wear down constantly growing teeth.
- Vitamin C every day. Unlike humans, we can't make our own, so we rely on our diet to provide it.
- Daily pellets should only help fill nutritional gaps, not replace hay. Small Pet Select Guinea Pig Food Pellets are fortified with vitamin C to help keep guinea pigs healthy, active, and popcorning with joy.
- Fresh vegetables add variety and nutrition. Introduce new foods gradually and offer a colorful mix of guinea pig-safe veggies.
- Treats should stay treats. Fruits and sweeter vegetables are best enjoyed in moderation.
- Not all foods are safe for guinea pigs. Some hooman foods can cause serious health problems, so always check before sharing a snack.
Being a guinea pig is hard work! There's hay to nibble, veggies to sample, pellets to inspect, and treats to politely beg for.
Luckily, Big Momma makes sure my bowl is filled with everything I need to stay healthy and happy.
Speaking of which, after all this snacking and popcorning, I'm ready for a nap...followed by more snacking, of course!
Sending you wheek-worthy, snack-filled wishes,
Gizmo
