Crunchy Conundrum: Can Rabbits Eat Celery?

Can rabbits eat celery?

Celery sometimes comes with a few myths when someone asks, can rabbits eat celery?

They definitely can. And they should! Because celery is a great source of Vitamin A, C, potassium, and fiber. The reason celery gets a bad rap is because of the long strings that make up the stalks.

The concern is over whether or not a rabbit can chew up these strings so they don’t get caught in their system causing a blockage. Rabbits have very sharp teeth and they certainly can chew the celery strings.

But just because they can doesn’t mean they always will. If you’re concerned, just chop up your rabbit’s celery into chunks. No big deal!

Let the celery party begin!

Celery Is A Great Low-Sugar Choice

Bugs Bunny always has a carrot in hand. But did you know that celery would be an even better choice? Carrots are a vegetable that’s very high in sugar and should really be compared to fruit when it comes to fresh food for rabbits

Celery is actually 95% water. So this snack is a bit like a water bottle for a little bun. It does an excellent job keeping them hydrated!

Can Rabbits Eat Celery Leaves?

Rabbits can eat both the stalks and the leaves! So you can put celery on the leafy greens list too.

While celery is a great snack, as always, don’t overdo it. We know that most of your rabbit’s day needs to be spent at the hay pile. Don’t give your rabbit more than half a stalk per day.

And feel free to add celery leaves to any other leafy greens you’re giving your rabbit that day. Rabbits shouldn’t be given more than 2 cups of leafy greens a day.

Other Low-Sugar Vegetables For Rabbits

Rabbits love trying new flavors and textures so don’t stop at celery. Any of these low-sugar options make great snacks for your bun.

  • Kale

  • Spring greens

  • Bell peppers

  • Carrot Tops

  • Bok choy

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Turnip Greens

  • Cucumber

  • Herbs (basil, cilantro, dill, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme)

  • Watercress

  • Wheatgrass

  • Zucchini

  • Arugula

When you add anything new to your rabbit’s diet, start with a very small piece. Don’t make any dramatic changes to your rabbit’s diet and always watch your rabbit to make sure they’re feeling well with their new snacks.

Can Rabbits Eat Celery For Treats?

Celery is a great treat! You can also use celery for foraging. Chop it up into small pieces and hide the celery around your rabbit’s enclosure.

Dried vegetables are another option. And they’re even easier to use when setting up a foraging environment. Dried tomatoes and bell peppers are a lot of bunnies’ favorites! They’re the perfect tiny treat to find.

Keeping Your Rabbit’s Diet Balanced

When I say a “balanced diet” I’m not saying they should have the same amounts of everything. What I mean is, you want to keep their digestive system and gut bacteria balanced. Without any bad bacteria taking over.

Hay has most of the fiber and nutrients that a rabbit needs. This is why we need to keep the focus on grass hay and use fun foods like celery as a much smaller piece of the puzzle. Can rabbits eat celery? As a snack!
